Traffic Camera FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Traffic Calming
There’s no single solution for traffic calming. Each street and neighborhood is different. Effective approaches depend on factors like speed limits, street shape and slope, traffic volume, width, presence of sidewalks, nearby schools or parks, and existing traffic signals. If construction is involved, the expected cost should be carefully considered to ensure the solution is practical and cost-effective for that location.

Traffic calming policy in Newcastle is guided by Resolution 2012-0519 and Appendix ATo make a request, please visit newcastlewa.gov/report.

Traffic Enforcement
While traffic calming focuses on using street design to naturally slow vehicles and improve safety, traffic enforcement takes a different approach by relying on laws and penalties to influence driver behavior. This can include issuing tickets for speeding, running stop signs, or other unsafe driving. Unlike traffic calming, which changes the physical environment, enforcement works through rules and consequences to encourage safer driving.
