The City of Newcastle is proud to celebrate its 16th year as a Tree City USA community, a national recognition that reflects the City’s long-standing commitment to urban forestry and environmental stewardship.
This milestone coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Tree City USA program, led by the Arbor Day Foundation. In its 2025 recognition, the Foundation shared, “Your commitment to creating a greener, healthier community is a significant achievement, and we’re proud to have you as part of the Tree City USA program.”
Tree City USA recognizes communities that meet core standards for tree care, including adopting a tree ordinance, investing in community forestry, and celebrating Arbor Day. Newcastle’s continued participation reflects years of thoughtful planning, sustained investment, and strong community involvement.
Newcastle’s efforts are reflected in its tree canopy coverage. According to the 2017 South King County Urban Tree Canopy Assessment, Newcastle ranks third among 15 southern King County communities with 47% canopy coverage, placing the City well within the 40–60% range considered achievable for forested states like Washington.
Trees play a vital role in Newcastle by improving air and water quality, managing stormwater, reducing heat, and enhancing neighborhood character. Looking ahead, the City remains committed to protecting and growing its urban forest for the benefit of future generations.
