Newcastle Community Noise Reminder

Community Noise ReminderWith these longer, lighter summer days we share this time of year, it's important to recognize the importance of Newcastle’s noise restrictions. The community is outdoors far more than usual this time of year, either actively working to maintain or improve property, or to simply sit or walk and enjoy the surrounding peace and tranquility. This extends also to just having our doors and windows open more frequently to enjoy the warmer season.

To protect the quality and peaceful character of the community, the City implements important noise restrictions, primarily based on time of day. Two primary restrictions involve activities on properties in and around our neighborhoods.

The first is a restriction on sounds originating from construction sites, including but not limited to sounds from construction equipment, power tools, and hammering between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. on weekdays and 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. on weekends and holidays. Through the building permit and code enforcement process, the City focuses construction activity to the allowable daytime hours.

A broader, smaller-scale, but just as important second restriction prohibits sounds originating from residential property relating to temporary projects for the maintenance or repair of homes, grounds, and appurtenances, including but not limited to sounds from lawnmowers, powered hand tools, and composters, between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. on weekdays and 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. on weekends and holidays.

These two prohibitions limit public disturbance noise but allow ample daytime periods for noise generating activity to occur. A complete listing of noise restrictions can be found as Section 9.05.510 (Noise) of the Newcastle Municipal Code.

Please be considerate and caring for your neighbors and the community by observing the noise hour restrictions.
