You're Invited: Celebrate Earth Day With the City of Newcastle!
Posted on 03/27/2019

This year, Newcastle is offering two events celebrating Earth Day: A Tree Planting and Composting Workshop at the Newcastle Library and a volunteer opportunity in Hazelwood Park.

TREE PLANTING AND COMPOSTING WORKSHOP
Learn tree planting and care tips from local experts and get composting tips and supplies from Waste Management on Saturday, April 20, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Newcastle Library. Newcastle residents who attend the workshop will receive a voucher for $50 towards a tree at Newcastle Fruit & Produce. (View flyer here for more details)

EARTH DAY VOLUNTEER EVENT
Community members are also invited to participate in a volunteer event to remove invasive English ivy and other weeds in Hazelwood Park (7399 121st PL SE). English ivy threatens trees by growing up their trunks, blocking them from sunlight, and weighing them down. During this event, volunteers will remove English ivy by hand.

The event goes from 3:15-6 p.m. on Monday, April 22. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own work gloves and water bottles. Please be aware, Hazelwood Park does not have a bathroom. The closest bathroom is located at Donegal Park, a few blocks away. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. Work gloves and water bottles will be provided for volunteers if needed. All volunteers under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. You can download the waiver here. Volunteers under 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
