Remembering Deputy Herzog on Peace Officers Memorial Day
Posted on 05/09/2018

May 15 is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, a date that pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. The calendar week in which May 15 falls is also known as National Police Week.

In Newcastle, it’s a time to remember King County Sheriff's Office Deputy Rich Herzog who was killed in the line of duty along Coal Creek Parkway in June 2002. A memorial to Deputy Herzog sits on Coal Creek Parkway near the Newcastle Fruit and Produce Stand. In preparation for National Police Week, city staff members spruced up the area around the memorial this week (pictured here). Photos will also be added along the fence behind the memorial marker to add emphasis to the location.

Last year, marking 15 years since the tragedy, the city unveiled a special memorial page on its website, filled with photos and information about Deputy Herzog. View it at newcastlewa.gov/herzog.

We will never forget Newcastle Deputy Rich Herzog's ultimate sacrifice.
