Coming Soon: Traffic Lane Striping at Newcastle Elementary
Posted on 01/18/2019

The city has developed a traffic paint striping plan in an effort to make school drop-offs and pick-ups safer for children and to reduce traffic conflicts near Newcastle Elementary School. This project will create a designated lane for vehicles lining up to pick up and drop off kids for school on 136th Avenue Southeast. View the diagram below to see how this will look.

Currently, the narrow section of road south of the school access is 26 feet in width (curb to curb). Re-striping will provide one 9.5-foot-wide northbound lane, one 9.5-foot-wide southbound lane and a 7-foot-wide queueing lane to help with the high-use periods that occur near school bell times. The goal is to address traffic and safety concerns and provide clarity to those traveling along the road. It is anticipated that the project will be implemented some time in February 2019, depending on the weather.

The topic of Newcastle Elementary congestion came up again during the council’s joint meeting with the Issaquah School District on Oct. 16, 2018, when a resident urged the city and district to widen a portion of 136th Avenue Southeast in front of the school.

During that meeting, the council and district reviewed some possible short-term solutions (an emphasis on police ticketing for illegal parking and lane re-striping, for example) and how to partner on a better, more permanent solution (discussions between the city and district will continue in that regard). In response, the City Council allocated money to fund some sort of project to address safety concerns on the school road in the 2019 budget.

In November 2018, Newcastle Elementary Principal Tod Wood wrote a letter to the community urging drivers to “engage in thoughtful and reflective practices” as they travel through the neighborhood. View the full email here.

“Please observe speed limits and come to full stops where required,” Wood wrote. “Please park only in appropriate locations. Never park in such a way as to block a driveway (or within a resident’s driveway). Let’s all be safe, show kindness, and be respectful.”
