City Council Meeting Agenda | March 19, 2019
Posted on 03/15/2019

The Newcastle City Council will consider two ordinances and review a resolution regarding the construction of new park signs at the March 19 regular meeting.

New and consistent signage is coming to all city parks. City Project Planner Julie Cassata presented the designs for new city park signs during a meeting nearly a year ago. There are 17 parks in Newcastle, but the current signage varies. Some have green entry signs, others have developer-designed signs absent of regulatory information, and some don’t have any signage.

Consistency in graphics and regulatory information, a physical structure design that’s safe for the public and completing the project at a reasonable cost, were all important project objectives. The Newcastle City Council will review a resolution awarding a contract to a firm that will fabricate the signs.

The City Council is also expected to discuss the city's current standards regarding the expansion of non-conforming businesses in the downtown corridor. Current city development standards restrict Safeway, QFC and other nonconforming businesses downtown from expanding. The City Council directed staff to draft provisions to allow limited expansion of such businesses. A public comment period is attached to consideration of this ordinance.

Finally, the council will conduct its second review of a proposed franchise agreement that would allow a company working on behalf of Verizon to install and expand fiber-optic lines in the city right-of-way. A public comment period is attached to consideration of this ordinance.
