Chamber Celebrates Community at 2019 Diamond Awards
Posted on 03/15/2019

The Newcastle Chamber of Commerce handed out the 2019 Diamond Awards during a special gala at The Golf Club at Newcastle the evening of March 14. The annual event honors individuals and businesses who give back to the Newcastle community. Whether it was the opening performing by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Alan White, or the touching tribute to a volunteer who left his mark on Newcastle, there were plenty of moments that made this year's ceremony special.

The legendary Yes drummer Alan White took the stage at the start, playing a medley of hits, including the band's iconic "Owner of a Lonely Heart." He was accompanied by members of his own band White and musicians from Risdon Middle School!

This year, the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce renamed it's Community Leadership Award after the late Jim Price, a tireless community volunteer who was instrumental in fostering the growth and maintenance of the city’s prized trail system. In 1994, Jim was among a group of dedicated citizens who successfully advocated for the city’s incorporation. He’d go on to serve as a founding member of the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce, Newcastle Trails and the Newcastle Arts Council. Jim had also served on the city’s all-volunteer Community Activities Commission since 2013. The night was made even more special when Jim's wife Peggy received a special Mayor's Award for her own volunteer efforts!

(Note: For those who attended the Diamond Awards ceremony, you can view the Jim Price tribute video they tried to play here).

Congratulations to all of the Diamond Awards nominees, finalists and winners! Thanks for EVERYTHING you do to make Newcastle a special community! A very special shout out to Newcastle Community Activities Commissioner Ed Flash, who was a finalist for the Community Leadership Award, and Youth Award winner Jennifer Heng, who serves as the youth representative on our CAC!
