Drivers: School is Back in Session
Posted on 09/06/2017

School is officially back in session across the city. Drivers, please be mindful of school zones when children are present and adhere to any posted speed limit and stop signs. As a reminder, it is illegal to pass a school bus stopped to load or unload children. See the full state law here.

With the new Risdon Middle School in place at the corner of 116th and Newcastle Way, we're reminding motorists to watch their speeds along those corridors before and after school.

"Motorists aren’t used to Risdon Middle School and the crosswalk along Newcastle Way. They are speeding and not seeing the students," said Newcastle Police Chief Melinda Irvine.

AAA offers the following tips for driving carefully through school zones:

Slow Down: Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason. A pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling just 10 mph faster.

Come to a Complete Stop: Research shows that more than one-third of drivers roll through stop signs in school zones or neighborhoods. Always come to a complete stop, checking carefully for children on sidewalks and in crosswalks before proceeding.

Eliminate Distractions: Research shows that taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chances of crashing. And children can be quick, crossing the road unexpectedly or emerging suddenly between two parked cars

Signage Along Newcastle Way, 116th

City staff installed new school zone signs on Newcastle Way to update the designated school zone in advance of the school’s opening. Additional related signs (School Zone Ahead) were installed on side streets intersecting Newcastle Way within the school zone. Spot vegetation clearing was also performed to improve visibility of the new and existing signs.

Additionally, a total of five solar-powered blinking stop signs were installed along 116th Avenue Southeast before school started. You can find three of them at the intersection of 116th and Southeast May Creek Park Drive and two more on 116th at the intersection of Southeast 76th Street. These were installed in response to a high incidence of stop sign violations at those intersections.
