City Awarded 4Culture Creative Consultancies Grant
Posted on 05/07/2019

A new partnership with 4Culture will allow the City of Newcastle to develop an arts and culture plan! The City is among the very first to receive grant funding under 4Culture’s new Creative Consultancies program, which matches organizations with creative consultants and artists to collaborate on cultural projects.

The City of Newcastle and the Newcastle Arts Council will work with consultant Claudia Bach to create an actionable plan and vision that focuses on how we can use arts and culture to promote the City and bring people together.

“Promoting arts and culture is an important part of creating a special place for our residents and community members,” said Community Activities Coordinator Wendy Kirchner.

Social science researchers have found that arts and culture can generate substantial public benefits. A vibrant arts culture contributes to a community's local identity and pride of place. It can spur creativity and imagination among individuals. There's also an economic component, as it attracts tourists and generally makes places attractive to businesses and their employees.

The project will involve meeting with many different stakeholder organizations and individuals to determine their needs and vision in helping to promote culture and arts as an important element of Newcastle’s future growth plans. Organizations include, but are not limited to the Newcastle Historical Society, Newcastle Trails and the Friends of the Newcastle Library. The end result of this effort will be a plan that all stakeholders can embrace and rally behind in future activities for the City.

The goal of the Creative Consultancy Program is to encourage and enable King County cities and departments to engage the talents of artists and creative thinkers in addressing some of the challenges and opportunities their communities are facing. Challenges which may include re-activating their downtown core in a changing retail environment, integrating new populations into the broader community, creating after-school opportunities for youth, health and safety concerns, homelessness or crime as well as discovering new opportunities for community expression of art and culture.
