Chief Houck Offers Update on Armed Prowler in Newcastle
Posted on 05/03/2019

I want to give folks an update as there are many false rumors floating around and I have received many an angry message for not giving more updates, so here we go.

Yes we have questioned an individual specifically about this incident.

He was arrested and booked for an unrelated warrant, not this incident.

No we have not positively identified him as the person walking around with the rifle.

Yes we have been working very hard to ID and find this guy and we have been throwing a lot of resources at doing it and we will continue to do so.

There have been NO NEW INCIDENTS that we are aware of.

I am sorry that many of you feel there has been a lack of communication by me about this. My goal when I started the NPD social media pages was just the opposite of that, but I am in a real catch 22 when it comes to putting out info.

Too much info and people get very scared and we possibly tip off our suspects. Not enough info and again, people get very scared.

Because this is an active investigation where we are still looking for a suspect, a lot of the info we have can't be put out.

In the meantime, I encourage people to go about their daily lives, Don't let this ruin your days, don't not do something because you are scared otherwise this jerk keeps winning."

This morning, Newcastle Police Chief Jason Houck addressed news reports about a man seen on video carrying what appears to be a rifle and trying doors at a Newcastle condo.

"NPD would like to address the stories going around regarding an armed prowler here in Newcastle. The news stories are true and the video you are seeing on the news stories is real. In the early morning hours of April 29th, a man was caught on video trying doors to a condo here in Newcastle. Looking at the video, it appears as if this man is holding an AR15 style rifle under his jacket. He is seen trying to open 2 different doors at the condo, both of which were locked. NPD was alerted to this the following morning and immediately began to investigate. Through this investigation, we confirmed at least 1 other similar incident that same night / morning just South of Newcastle in Renton and also learned of a possible incident just North in Bellevue. We are working with multiple agencies to try and identify this suspect. At this point we are not aware of any reported, successful break-ins by this suspect, or any actual encounters with him.

In the meantime, we do not want people to be so scared or alarmed that they do not go about their daily lives and routines. We just want this to serve as a reminder to always practice good safety in and around your home and everywhere for that matter.

At home, that starts outside with cars, lights, garage doors, your home doors, cameras, and even landscaping. Shut and lock ALL your doors every night, vehicles, home, garage, sheds, everything. Remove all belongings from your vehicles. If you have exterior lights make sure they are working, if they aren't motion activated, consider getting some of those. If you have cameras outside make sure they are functioning and that they are actually pointed in a useful direction, not down at someone’s feet. If you have shrubs or other landscaping that covers windows or lights, cut them back.

Moving inside, set alarms if you have them. Use your phone. If you see something or someone suspicious call the police then, don't wait to hear about something on the news or social media the next day, call and tell us about it while it is happening.

Again we at NPD want to assure you all that we are doing what we can to identify and locate this individual and will continue to do so. In the meantime if anyone out there recognizes this individual (view photos here) or if you look back on your cameras and find more video of him, please contact us."
